Diabetes is not the end.
Yes, it is an emotional journey in the beginning. I remember being pregnant, crying in the bathroom shower after being diagnosed with gestational diabetes. My doctor was shocked, and me? I felt…
Guilt. Shame. Depressed. Terrified.
These (and more) were all the feelings that hit me. For the sake of my growing child, I recognized the emotions and knew I had to do what was best for him at that very moment.
Fast forward a year after having a healthy, beautiful 7 lbs 8 oz boy, I recognized the symptoms of my blood sugar being off yet again.
Going into my doctor’s office to confirm my self-diagnosis was the most disappointing experience I’ve had.
I had to point out that they missed crucial lab numbers, including the most obvious A1C number to confirm my diagnosis. No instructions were given. Medication was immediately offered before first discussing a quick 2 minute lifestyle change pep talk. I could go on.
Thankfully, I focused my Dietetics and Nutritional Sciences education on diabetes management and self-care, so I knew what my next steps were with full-blown type 2 diabetes.
What many health professionals do not know is that you CAN reverse your type 2 diabetes.
The reason I am sharing my story with you is because I don’t want you to feel like you have no one that understands what’s going on. I don’t want you to feel alone. And I want you to feel confident that you can do so much more than just take medication and call it good.
Diabetes can be the BEST thing that has ever happened to you.
Take a moment to forgive yourself. Look at your children and know that you have the power of providing them an incredible, full life with you in the picture for a very. long. time.
